Stability Lobe Diagram for High Speed Machining Processes:Comparison of Experimental and Analytical Methods – A Review

چکیده
Chatter is a complicated problem faced by machine tool operators. Chatter is a self-excited vibration that can occur during machining operations. This is an undesirable phenomenon which limits the productivity of the machine. A lot of techniques have been developed to control the chatter. Stability lobe diagram is an effective tool which helps the operator to select specific spindle speeds during production to avoid chatter in machine. Stability lobes are plotted against axial depth of cut Vs spindle speed, which shows a boundary between stable and unstable cutting regions. Numerous experimental and analytical techniques have been developed to establish stability lobe diagram. This paper presents a review on experimental and analytical methods of obtaining stability lobe diagram in high speed milling operation.

INTRODUCTION The analytical stability lobe diagram offers a predictive capability for selecting stable chip width-spindle speed combinations in machining operations [1-4]. However, the increase in allowable chip width provided at spindle speeds near integer fractions of the system’s dominant natural frequency is diminished substantially at low spindle speeds where the stability lobes are closel...
متن کاملDynamic Stability of High Speed Micromilling Based on Modal Analysis for Determining the Tool-tip Dynamics
Micromilling process is used for fabrication and manufacturing of miniaturized components. Very high spindle rotational speeds are required in micromilling to reduce the chip load and to counter the low flexural rigidity of the micro-tool while machining hard materials. Apart from the high rotational speed (>100,000 rpm) which can excite dynamic instability, the dynamic force variation in micro...

A new dynamical modeling of Active Magnetic Bearing Spindle (AMBS) to identify machining stability of High Speed Milling (HSM) is presented. This original modeling includes all the minimum required parameters for stability analysis of AMBS machining. The stability diagram generated with this new model is compared to classical stability lobes theory. Thus, behavior’s specificities are highlighte...

Stability diagrams can be applied in machining processes to optimize the maximum depth of cut at the highest available spindle speed, thus improving the material removal ...
